Super shoots and glorious greens 10/06/2015, Producers
There's nothing like going to the garden centre and buying beautiful living plants to bring something extra to the garden or house. They grow, they look beautiful, but how often do they taste this good?
In a glasshouse in Banwell, North Somerset, Philip Kidd grows amazing little shoots and greens. Free from any pesticides and fungicides, he encourages biodiversity on his land, cultivating in a sustainable way and with respect for the environment. Nutritious and delicious, these little micros are available all year round. All Shoots and Greens punnets are cut and packed just hours before being delivered to capture the very freshest taste.
Visiting Philip at his beautiful glasshouse down a quiet country near Banwell, it struck us immediately that he is no ordinary food producer. He grows shoots and micro-leaves that look strikingly beautiful and taste sweet and delicious. The shoots in the picture above really do taste as good as they look and are high in vitamins A, B, C and E too. They can be used raw in salads and sandwiches, but are excellent when added to stir-fries just before serving or sautéed in oil.
Peas are Philip's favourite too: “My personal favourite has to be pea shoots." says Philip. "They have a super fresh pea taste and a 50g punnet offers more than half of the RDA for vitamin C, a quarter of the RDA for vitamin A and significant amounts of folic acid. They are great served chilled in a light salad, but I like them best sautéed with ginger and garlic, seasoned and tossed with soy sauce.”
