Eat good, do good 10/06/2015, Producers

Green Shoots have been teaching prisoners in HMP Dartmoor to grow mushrooms for just over a year. Their gourmet oyster mushrooms are being snapped up by Michelin-star restaurants right across Devon. Mark Ellery, the project leader, has now kicked off the same initiative just north of Bristol in HMP Eastwood Park, a women's prison. Using Boston Tea Party organic coffee ground as a base to grow, this is a truly local initiative. Check out this film that shows you how it's done (thanks to BTP):

The vision behind Green Shoots is to create a system of sustainable food production. They say that by "encouraging and empowering ex-offenders and disadvantaged individuals, we can help reduce re-offending and make a valuable contribution to local communities." By building a network of growing centres both in custody and the community, Green Shoots are producing food on a commercial and sustainable basis. They are providing valuable training, life skills and experience for people in severely disadvantaged positions.

Add Green Shoots gourmet oyster mushrooms to your trolley for just £1.40 this week. And why not prepare the finest mushrooms on toast this weekend by combining with a Sherston Loaf from Hobbs House Bakery?
