Marriage's Millers Essex

Marriage's have been milling flour since 1824, when twins William and Henry founded the company aged just 17. Six generations later, Marriage's is a thriving family business focused on exceptional quality and using traditional methods, symbolised by the nineteenth-century French Burr stones the mill still uses today.

Early supporters of the British organic farming movement – father of the current director Sampson David Marriage helped found the Organic Food Federation - Marriage's work hard to support local Essex farmers and minimise food-miles. Essex is among the best regions for wheat-production in the UK; the majority of the wheat used by the mill is sourced less than 25 miles from the Marriage's site or from Marriage's own farm, Chelmer Mills. Certain varieties ground also use high-protein Canadian Red Wheat. The wheat is then tested, cleaned and blended on-site, before being ground into one of 32 types of flour. Given their long heritage, Marriage's have the knowledge to create an exceptional range of flours. Many of those milled are speciality types – including Chelmer White for sourdough, Dark Rye for pumpernickel breads and 100% Canadian White flour for bread, rolls and pasta.
