Castlemead Poultry Somerset

Stuart Perkins believes in taking a passionate, sustainable and traditional approach to rearing poultry at Castlemead in Radstock near Bath. With many of the top restaurants in Bristol and Bath serving poultry from Stuart’s farm, it is no surprise that Castlemead are a multi-award winning producer. Exceptionally, Castlemead are the only free-range chicken producer in Somerset to have an abbatoir onsite which means the birds can be moved at night and processed causing the least possible stress levels. The birds have a varied diet of locally milled cereals, home grown barley and whatever they can forage whilst roaming the Somerset hills. No additives, growth hormones or anything that alters growth are given. Just natural, nutritious. Look out for free-range geese, turkeys and cockerels from Castlemead at Christmas time.

So, what makes the chicken from Castlemead taste so much better than supermarket equivalents? “The chicken is looked after by our dedicated team, with fresh bedding and constant access to food and water providing the best welfare standards possible. From morning to nightfall the chickens are free to explore the fields surrounding their houses, incorporating natural goodness into their diets to compliment the locally grown and milled cereals they are fed. At night they retire to their houses for protection from the fox and a good night’s sleep. The birds here are allowed to grow in their own time - for far, far longer than mass produced chicken, making their meat succulent, firm and rich in flavor. Moved at night to reduce the birds stress levels, the chickens are processed onsite and hand finished for that farm to fork taste.
